Bang the Drum Slowly is a nineteen seventy three film adaptation of the nineteen fifty six baseball novel of the same name by Mark Harris. It was previously dramatized in nineteen fifty six on the U.S. Steel Hour with Paul Newman and Albert Salmi. The nineteen seventy three Bang the Drum Slowly was directed by John D. Hancock and stars Michael Moriarty as Henry (" Author") Wiggen, and a then young unknown player named Robert De Niro as Bruce Pearson.
It was played with hit office success andcritical acclaim. De Niro's execution in the film and in Mean Streets, published two months later, added him widespread acclaim. Comparedwith other roles which have seemed to typecast him as a troubled loner (as in The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, and Taxi Driver) or a charismatic sociopath (as in The Godfather: Part II, Once Upon A Time In America, Goodfellas and Cape Fear), the Pearson part has been seen as one of his more tragic and sensitive characters. The opening scenes of the film show the stars going the track at Yankee Stadium before its nineteen seventy three to nineteen seventy six renovation, but due to the renovation, the baseball scenes were filmed in Shea Stadium.
The film and work include a fictional card game known as tegwar, which means " The Exciting Game Without Any Rules." It is a game basically projected to break a mark from his cash. Henry Wiggenplays this game along with other baseball players and coaches, to suckerpassers - by in the lobby of the team motel. It is in general believed that Bruce Pearson is too dumb to be able to sucker people, so he is excluded. However, Henry starts to cover Bruce in the tegwar games as the history progresses. Bang the Drum Slowly is reportedly Robert De Niro's mate Al Pacino's favorite film. In comments, Wiggen is often referred to as being made after Tom Seaver.
